Manchester United supporters staged another protest against the club's ownership during Tuesday's Champions League meeting with AS Roma at Old Trafford.

Tennis balls, as well as green and gold balloons, appeared on the pitch as fans renewed their calls for the Glazer family and Sir Jim Ratcliffe to leave the club.

The demonstration had been organised ahead of kick-off, with supporters throwing dozens of tennis balls onto the pitch from the Stretford End.

Messages including “Sell United” and “f*** off home” were directed towards the club's hierarchy, while chants of “Stand up if you hate Glazers” rang around Old Trafford.

The protest was timed for the 21st minute to mark 21 years since the Glazer family's controversial takeover of Manchester United in 2005.

Minority owner Ratcliffe and director of football Jason Wilcox were also targeted, with the atmosphere described as “mutinous” by journalist Laurie Whitwell.

The tennis balls caused only a brief interruption, with players quickly clearing them from the playing surface before the match continued.

The demonstration came against the backdrop of a difficult start to the 2026-27 campaign, with United sitting 17th in the Premier League and having endured a nine-game winless run before Tuesday's fixture.

Ratcliffe has faced increasing criticism since acquiring an initial 25% stake in 2024 and taking control of football operations.

Two managerial changes, disappointing performances and increased ticket prices have added to supporter frustration.

Despite the protests, United produced a remarkable response on the pitch, recovering from 2-0 down to beat Roma 3-2 through a Bruno Fernandes penalty and a late Matheus Cunha brace.

The tennis ball protest was brief, but the message from sections of the Old Trafford crowd was unmistakable.

Supporters have spent years voicing opposition to the Glazers, and Ratcliffe's arrival has clearly not delivered the change many hoped would follow.

Tuesday's comeback provided a welcome moment of relief, but one result will not erase the wider concerns surrounding ownership, ticket prices and the direction of the club.

United's hierarchy cannot afford to mistake the celebrations at full-time for a resolution to the growing discontent in the stands.
