Workington AFC’s long-awaited stadium project has taken a major step forward.
And it comes at a poignant time for the town’s current home.
Workington Town receive £4.5m funding on eve of last-ever Borough Park match
Workington AFC and Workington Town RLFC have been handed a significant boost, with £4.5 million in additional funding secured for the new Cumberland Sports Village.
The investment, provided by the Cumbria Combined Authority, will enhance plans for the redevelopment of the Borough Park site.
The extra funding will allow for an expanded scheme, including the replacement of all terraces and an increase in capacity to around 5,000.
The wider project is designed to go beyond matchdays, with ambitions for the venue to act as a central hub for the community – hosting events, conferences and local activities alongside sport.
A planning decision is expected soon, with updated timelines and designs also in the works as the project evolves.
The news arrives just as Borough Park prepares to host its final-ever game, marking the end of an era for football in the town.
FGG says: A fitting next step as one chapter closes
There’s a real sense of timing about this.
Saying goodbye to Borough Park is a significant moment, but securing additional funding now helps ensure the next chapter isn’t just a replacement, but rather an upgrade.
For a non-league club, this level of investment is huge and shows genuine intent to build something sustainable for both sport and the wider community.
If delivered as planned, the Sports Village won’t just fill the gap left behind and it should elevate what Workington offers on and off the pitch for years to come.
