After a full week, the first round of group-stage matches at the 2026 World Cup have been played, meaning that we have now watched who will lift the famous trophy in New York/New Jersey on July 19.

Hosts Mexico and the United States got off to winning starts, Germany demolished Curacao and Cape Verde produced one of the greatest defensive performances in the tournament's history, managing a goalless draw with European champions Spain.

The superstars – apart from Cristiano Ronaldo – came out to play in the first round of fixtures, with Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland bagging braces, whilst Lionel Messi bested them all with a sensational hat-trick.

Following a breathtaking seven days of action, we are going to take our eyes off the pitch for a moment and into the stands to review some of the best fan outfits at the World Cup so far, including entries from Iraq, Colombia and Argentina.

Mexico were given the honour of opening the tournament last Thursday, with the CONCACAF giants securing a comfortable 2-0 victory over South Africa at the iconic Azteca Stadium, where three red cards were handed out.

Supporters of El Tri created a special atmosphere for the first game of the World Cup and did not disappoint on the pre-game catwalk, with this particular fan wearing a detailed outfit with skull masks, paying homage to Mictlantecuhtli, the Aztec god of the underworld.

Producing arguably the best individual performance of the World Cup so far, Lionel Messi netted a hat-trick for reigning champions Argentina as they commenced their campaign with a comfortable 3-0 win over Algeria.

The Inter Miami star was the centre of attention at Kansas City Stadium as nearly 70,000 supporters were lucky enough to witness the attacker's greatness in the flesh, with this Argentina fan donning a creative Messi bobblehead.

Mesopotamia to Massachusetts

Back at the World Cup finals for the first time in 40 years, Iraq began their North American campaign with a tough 4-1 defeat to dark horses Norway, who found the net twice in the first half thanks to talismanic striker Erling Haaland.

The loss in Foxborough, Massachusetts did little to tame the enthusiasm of the Lions of Mesopotamia, though, with one supporter wearing a striking lion headpiece, as well as matching claws, clutching at a replica World Cup trophy.

Colours of Colombia

After Portugal could only manage a draw with DR Congo during their opening match of Group K, Colombia took control at the top of the four-team section with a 3-1 victory over tournament debutants Uzbekistan on Wednesday night.

Wearing a large, ornate, feathered Native-American-style war bonnet, this fan brought the colours of Colombia to Mexico City, completing his outfit with red, yellow and blue body part to really stand out amongst the crowd.

Rated by many as the best match of the first round of fixtures, England produced a blistering second-half performance to defeat Group L contenders Croatia 4-2 at Dallas Stadium, where captain Harry Kane scored twice.

After making headlines at Euro 2024, the Three Lions have moved from the shirt to the stands once again to support one of the pre-tournament favourites. The practicality of these outfits will be tested in a stadium bereft of air conditioning, though.
