The largest stadium at the FIFA World Cup is expected to enter the tournament without an official sponsor after the previous rights holder declined to renew its deal.

The stadium, which was previously known around the world as the MetLife Stadium, will no longer bear that name, in an announcement that could prove to be a logistical nightmare for fans ahead of the World Cup.

The MetLife Stadium is no more

MetLife's decision not to renew its deal was officially communicated this weekend, and it coincided with ongoing work at the stadium to cover up all MetLife branding ahead of the World Cup.

The New Jersey-based stadium, which had been sponsored by MetLife since 2011, will host several big matches throughout the World Cup, including the biggest of them all – the final on Sunday, 19 July.

Even prior to MetLife's decision to walk away from their 15-year deal, FIFA had already ruled that it would be called the New Jersey New York Stadium for the duration of the World Cup. This rule has been enforced across all host stadiums due to FIFA's sponsorship rules.

In terms of logistics, the fact that MetLife have officially walked away from sponsoring the stadium provides FIFA with a bigger headache. Now, instead of just changing signage at the stadium, they will perhaps need to work with local authorities to change all signage in the local area.

FGG says: A problem to solve at a later date

FIFA have too much on their plate ahead of the World Cup to start getting worked up about the naming rights of a stadium that was always going to be called something different for the tournament. The issue is bigger for the New York Giants and New York Jets owners, who will both need to secure new sponsors ahead of the 2026/27 NFL season.
