The Jose Alvalade Stadium is one of the grounds built for the purpose of hosting Euro 2004. It has been able to offer Sporting Lisbon a modern home that is capable of taking in more than 50,000 fans. Just like many other continental grounds built for hosting football, this stadium has a bowl style with four stands and two tiers. The North Stand is maintained exclusively for home supporters, while the West Stand houses some of the important sections of the ground like the changing rooms and dugouts.
The visiting supporters will predominantly sit in the south stand. All visiting supporters will appreciate the outstanding facilities at the ground. These are not limited to just the food and drinks which are available just outside and inside the stadium. One can also appreciate Sporting Lisbon playing on this pitch, as the views are unhindered.

Away entrance at Jose Alvalade Stadium
As per the Sporting CP website, “visiting fans have an area reserved in A9, which can be extended to sectors A7, A11, B7, B11 and B13”. This is located in the north-west part of the Jose Alvalade Stadium, with an allocation of around 2,500 for Champions League matches.
There are four entrances at this part of the stadium: Gates 1, 2, 12 and V. Gate V and 1 are typically the turnstiles that away fans are escorted to by the local police.
In its current form, the Estadio Jose Alvalade Stadium has an all-seated capacity of 50,095, making it a similar size to many of the major grounds in England and across the entirety of Europe.
The ground has an incredibly unique design, featuring a two-tiered bowl layout that is continuous, rather than split into individual stands. This isn’t unique to Sporting, with many clubs adopting this design. However, most clubs usually still treat the ground as having four stands for logistical purposes, whereas Sporting do not.
The number of non-hospitality seats in each tier is as follows:
- Tier A – 24,261
- Tier B – 21,970
Built in 2003, Estadio Jose Alvalade Stadium does not have the same humble beginnings in the same way that older grounds tend to have. It has always been a huge venue, and likely always be.
If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit the stadium, then you will most likely be in need of a good pub for those pre-match beers.
As is usually the case, you will want to avoid the immediate areas surrounding the venue, and instead head towards the city centre.
Our top suggestions are:
- O’Gilins Irish Pub, R. dos Remolares 8, 1200-371 Lisbon, Portugal
- Cheers Irish Pub, R. da Atalaia 126, 1200-043 Lisbon, Portugal
Similar to the pub, you will also be in need of a place to stay if you intend on visiting the ground.
Our top three suggestions of hotels that have good reviews and are located near the venue are as follows:
- Radisson Blu Hotel, Lisbon, Av. Mal. Craveiro Lopes 390, 1749-009 Lisbon, Portugal
- Lisbon Marriott Hotel, Av. dos Combatentes 45, 1600-042 Lisbon, Portugal
One of the perks of a bowl-like design is that entrance into the ground is an incredibly easy process and far quicker than older, more traditional four-stand venues.
There will be multiple turnstiles located along the perimeter of the site, all you need to do is simply review your matchday ticket details to find which one you should be entering through for your specific seat.
At the South Goal End at Sporting CP’s home stadium, you can find the club’s organised fan groups. On the south-west side of the ground, there are four entry points: Gates 8, 9, 10, and 11. Meanwhile, at the south-east part of the ground, supporters can enter the stadium via Gates 6 and 7.
Elsewhere, Gates 3, 4 and 5 are located at the north-east section of the stadium for home fans to enter.
The Sporting Lisbon stadium is quite easy to reach by car. It is located just on the E1 motorway. In order to get to the stadium, one has to take the exit 5 Campo Grande. Since the ground is located only about 7 km away from the city centre of Lisbon, it is very connected through a variety of roads. The ground is also just 2 km away from Estádio da Luz – the home of Benfica.
One can enter the following address in the satnav: Rua Professor Fernando da Fonseca, Apartado 4120, 1501-806 Lisboa
Once at the José Alvalade stadium, fans will be able to use the underground car park, which is quite spacious and large. There are also parking options near the ground if this underground car park is full. If someone is travelling by air, they would be getting to the Lisbon Portela Airport, which is only a few miles from the Sporting Lisbon ground.
By train or metro
For a stadium located in the centre of the Portuguese capital, it is not surprising that Sporting Lisbon has near ground well connected through trains running from across Europe. For those who want to get from the centre of the city to the ground using the Metro, the choice would be the green or yellow line. This can be used to get off at the Campo Grande Station, which is just outside the stadium.
The ticket prices at Jose Alvalade Stadium depend on a number of factors like the opposition, time of the season, membership status, seating position, and more. During every match, the club provides a small number of tickets at €5 but landing one of them can be quite difficult. The cheapest tickets that are available on a regular basis would be €17 and they would be located high up in the stands. The best seats in the ground would cost €42, and these are seats located on either side of the pitch.
Benfica
FC Porto
Sporting Lisbon were able to build this new ground only after the century. This results in a decent quality and quantity of disabled facilities. For example, there are 50 seats for disabled spectators who will also get to easy access from the parking levels. There are also special restroom facilities for disabled people. One of the features useful for disabled fans would be the ability to take a companion, whose entry is available at a concessional rate. One can also enter the stadium with a wheelchair thanks to special entry points in the level I parking zone.
A tour of the Jose Alvalade Stadium is available from Sporting CP. It provides an extensive highlight of the club’s history. The tour of one of the largest grounds in Portugal is provided at specific times of the day. The tour can be customised to include the museum. For a tour of the stadium alone, fans will have to shell around €8 while combining the museum tour will take the price up to €14.
