‘A historic disgrace’ – Barcelona fan groups vent anger over controversial new Camp Nou fan stand model

Barcelona’s decision to create a new supporters’ group for the reopening of the renovated Spotify Camp Nou has been met with widespread backlash from existing fan organisations.

During the 2025 Ordinary General Assembly, club vice president Elena Fort announced plans for the group, which will be named ‘Gol 1957’ as a tribute to the stadium’s original inauguration date, 24 September 1957.

The new stand will have a capacity of 1,247 seats and will be reserved for fans aged 18 to 25 who have been on the waiting list for over five years. It will also aim for gender balance and at least 80% attendance at home matches.

Fan groups express frustration

According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, the announcement sparked an immediate reaction from long-time supporters, who took to social media to criticise the move. Many described it as a decision that erases decades of supporter culture and tradition.

One group, ‘Nostra Ensenya’, said: “They have destroyed 125 years of sentiment. Those in charge have disrespected hundreds of loyal members who have stood by Barca through thick and thin. A historic disgrace.”

Another, ‘Seguiment FCB’, accused the club of ignoring fan input, stating: “They didn’t even consider the study we presented. They act without respect for the members who built the atmosphere. We must now unite and fight to reclaim it.”

Penya Barcelonista Front 532 also directed criticism at Fort, saying: “You are dismantling a stand that has never caused problems and has always given everything to support the team. This farce will collapse, and you will be responsible.”

When will the new Camp Nou open?

Barcelona are still playing home matches at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, where they have been based since 2023. Although they initially hoped to return in late 2024, construction delays have pushed that timeline back.

The full reopening of Camp Nou is now projected for 2026, with a phased return expected by November 2025, once further safety and capacity permits are secured.

When completed, the new stadium will hold 105,000 spectators and feature upgraded facilities, a retractable roof, and modern fan zones, including the controversial ‘Gol 1957’ section that has caused such division among the fanbase.

FGG Says

Barcelona’s attempt to modernise their supporter structure may be well-intentioned, but the backlash shows a deep disconnect between the boardroom and the terraces. Emotional ties to the club’s fan culture cannot be easily redesigned.

The club must find a balance between creating a youthful, inclusive atmosphere and respecting the legacy of long-standing groups that helped make Camp Nou famous for its atmosphere. Without unity, even a £1.3bn stadium could feel empty.
