AS Roma’s plans for a new stadium in Pietralata have received a significant boost after heritage authorities raised no objections to the project’s environmental approval.

The development remains subject to archaeological and landscaping conditions, with construction still targeted for spring 2027.

The Soprintendenza, Italy’s state heritage protection authority, has concluded that there are no grounds preventing the environmental impact assessment from being issued, subject to a series of recommendations and requirements.

The opinion represents an important step forward for the proposed stadium, although archaeological investigations remain ongoing across parts of the site.

The southern half of the area has already been surveyed, with further excavations required in the northern section, particularly around a Roman villa, an ancient road and a historic cistern.

The authority has called for the Roman villa to be uncovered and protected, while the cistern is expected to be preserved within the stadium itself. Further investigations will also examine underground galleries and tunnels that could affect the foundations.

Landscaping requirements include protecting existing trees, increasing vegetation and providing shade along pedestrian routes. Additional greenery has also been recommended around multi-storey car parks.

The decision-making Services Conference, which began on July 27th, is due to conclude at the end of September, with a final meeting scheduled for Monday, September 28th.

A positive outcome would allow the project to move into its next stage of preparation, with construction targeted to begin in spring 2027, coinciding with Roma’s centenary.
