Aston Villa have been fined by UEFA and handed a suspended away ticket ban after supporters displayed what European football's governing body described as a “discriminatory banner” during the Europa League final.

The punishment will not affect Villa supporters immediately, but the club now faces the prospect of further sanctions should a similar incident occur within the next two years.

UEFA sanction Aston Villa after what happened at Europa League final

UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) has fined Aston Villa €10,000 (around £8,500) following the display of a “discriminatory banner” by supporters during the Europa League final victory over Freiburg at Besiktas Park in Istanbul.

Villa have also received a suspended one-match ban on selling tickets to away supporters for their first Champions League away fixture of the 2026/27 season. The sanction has been suspended for a probationary period of two years.

A UEFA source told The Athletic that the banner referenced the traveller community.

Under their regulations, match organisers are required to prevent and remove provocative or discriminatory banners, flags and other offensive material inside stadiums. In more serious cases involving racist incidents, officials also have the power to temporarily halt matches while public announcements are made.

The disciplinary action comes despite Villa enjoying one of the biggest nights in the club's recent history, defeating Freiburg 3-0 on May 20 to lift the Europa League trophy – their first major European honour in 44 years.

For travelling supporters, the suspended ban serves as a warning that any repeat offences during the probation period could result in away fans being unable to attend a future UEFA fixture.

FGG says: Villa fans will hope the focus stays on the football

Villa supporters have waited decades to see their club competing for major European honours again, and away followings have played a huge part in that journey.

While this suspended punishment has no immediate impact, fans will hope that this was a one-off and that future European trips are remembered for the atmosphere inside the stadium rather than disciplinary issues off the pitch.
