Atletico Madrid unveil ‘transformative’ stadium project set to cost more than £300m

Atletico Madrid and the City of Madrid have announced plans for a project that will transform the concrete shell next to Estadio Metropolitano.

Estadio Metropolitano set for multi-purpose expansion

Over the past few days, the club and local authorities have confirmed a joint project to convert the unfinished and currently unused Aquatic Centre into a hub for concerts, leisure, and education.

American firms Live Nation and Oak View Group will lead the redevelopment, overseeing the transformation of the site into a fully functional multi-use venue.

Ángel Gil, CEO of Atletico de Madrid, said: “We’ve been looking for ways to breathe new life into this venue for nearly 15 years.

“This project is the result of years of perseverance.”

Backed by funding from Madrid’s city council, the project will include a concert hall with a capacity of over 20,000, a modernised university campus for around 2,300 students, and a sports complex expected to serve approximately 9,000 people.

Work is set to be done by 2030 with the Mayor of Madrid hoping to attract the world's leading artists.

FGG says: New plans will be a major boost for the city

With plans for the redevelopment set to be completed by 2030, exciting times lie ahead for the Athletico Madrid fans and people of the city.

The addition of improved university and sporting facilities will provide clear benefits for students and the wider public, while also making far better use of an underutilised space.

Many top clubs around the world now have their own multi-purpose facilities alongside their stadiums, and this news ensures Diego Simeone’s side are following the trends and keeping up with the times.
