Barcelona’s long-running Camp Nou redevelopment could take another unexpected twist in the coming years.
Fresh updates suggest supporters may once again face a temporary move away from the club’s iconic home due to the ongoing construction work.
Camp Nou roof works could force Barcelona back to Johan Cruyff Stadium
Barcelona may be forced to temporarily relocate matches away from Camp Nou during a crucial phase of the stadium’s redevelopment.
Club president Joan Laporta has revealed that roof installation work, which is expected to begin around summer 2027, could require the stadium to be partially or fully vacated for a short period.
As a result, Barcelona are considering a return to the much smaller Estadi Johan Cruyff, which currently holds around 8,000 spectators.
Plans are already being explored to expand that capacity by a further 10,000 seats to make the temporary move more viable.
The redevelopment of Camp Nou is already running around 18 months behind schedule, with previous delays forcing the club to briefly use the Johan Cruyff stadium and then relocate to Montjuïc for matches.

FGG says: Another disruption highlights scale of Camp Nou rebuild
At this point, further disruption almost feels inevitable given the scale of the project.
Installing a roof on a stadium as large and complex as Camp Nou is a huge undertaking, so a temporary relocation, while inconvenient, may be the most practical solution.
The idea of playing at an 8,000-capacity venue is far from ideal for a club of Barcelona’s size, but short-term compromises are sometimes necessary in major redevelopments.
For supporters, it’s another reminder that the road back to a fully completed Camp Nou will still take some time.
The end result promises a world-class venue and significantly increased revenue, but the journey there continues to be anything but straightforward.
