Barcelona began renovation work on the Camp Nou in June 2023, temporarily moving to Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys. The club initially aimed to return by December 2024, but delays mean the work remains ongoing.
Although the full reopening is scheduled for 2026, Barcelona have now received their first occupancy permit for Phase 1A of the project. This allows a provisional capacity of 27,000, but the club has decided to wait before returning.
According to EFE, Barcelona plan to delay their move until the 1B licence is granted, which will expand the capacity to 45,000 spectators. They believe the short gap between both approvals makes waiting the smarter option.
The club also noted that staying at Lluis Companys helps them maintain higher matchday revenue compared to playing at the Johan Cruyff Stadium, while also providing extra time for operational testing.

When will Barcelona return to Camp Nou?
Barcelona have played at Lluis Companys for two seasons, and if they had moved back now, they could have hosted matches against Girona and Olympiacos at Camp Nou.
However, the return is now expected to come after the November international break, possibly in time for the Athletic Club fixture on November 22. Before then, Hansi Flick’s side will host Elche on November 2 at Lluis Companys.

What will be the new Camp Nou capacity?
Camp Nou once held up to 120,000 spectators in 1982, before regulations reduced it to around 99,000. The ongoing redevelopment will increase capacity to 105,000, further boosting revenue opportunities for the club.
FGG Says
Barcelona’s cautious approach makes sense financially and operationally. Returning too early could have disrupted construction timelines and matchday logistics, especially with limited capacity and infrastructure still incomplete.
By waiting for the 1B licence, the club ensures a smoother transition back home. It is a strategic move that keeps revenue steady and allows fans to experience a better-prepared, partially completed Camp Nou.
