In recent years, tifos have become a central part of the matchday experience at St James' Park.

Since the club’s takeover in 2021, supporter group Wor Flags has played a huge role in transforming the visual atmosphere at Newcastle United home games.

Their displays regularly celebrate the club’s players, reflect on its proud history and, at times, send powerful messages on behalf of the fanbase.

From huge European-night spectacles to tributes for fan favourites, FootballGroundGuide takes a look at some of the best tifos seen on Tyneside.

Champions League return and the Eddie Howe tribute

When Newcastle United returned to the Champions League after a 20-year absence, Wor Flags pulled out all the stops.

For their clash with Paris Saint-Germain in October 2023, supporters produced a stunning display across the stadium. The centrepiece was a giant football bursting open to reveal Monty the Magpie, Newcastle’s mascot, symbolising the club announcing itself back on the European stage.

Across the stands, a shimmering black-and-white foil display added to the spectacle, while the Leazes End spelt out “Hello Hello, We Are The Geordie Boys”, a famous terrace chant. The atmosphere proved unforgettable as Newcastle sealed a historic 4–1 victory.

Wor Flags have also shown their appreciation for the manager behind the club’s resurgence.

Ahead of a Champions League play-off against Qarabag FK, fans unveiled a huge tifo dedicated to Eddie Howe.

The banner celebrated Howe’s leadership since arriving on Tyneside, underlining the deep connection he has built with supporters, even if he admitted afterwards that he initially missed the display when walking out for the match.

Player tributes and local pride

Newcastle supporters have always had a soft spot for their heroes, and several of the stadium’s most memorable tifos have centred on the players.

One of the most eye-catching displays celebrated Alexander Isak, with a huge banner hailing the striker as “Alexander the Great.” Newcastle fans love a prolific forward, and Isak’s impact quickly made him a fan favourite.

Wor Flags have also honoured the club’s homegrown talent. In a display titled “Local Lads,” the banner featured players with ties to the region, including Dan Burn and Sean Longstaff, alongside several academy products.

The message resonated strongly with supporters, reflecting the pride Geordies feel when local players represent the club on the pitch.

Meanwhile, fans also rallied around Sandro Tonali during his betting investigation, unveiling a banner at St James’ Park to show their backing during a difficult period.

Messages, history and the spirit of Newcastle

Wor Flags are also not afraid to make statements on behalf of the fanbase.

During the #StopExploitingLoyalty campaign, supporters displayed a banner featuring a famous quote from legendary manager Sir Bobby Robson:

“It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city…”

The quote perfectly captured what Newcastle United means to its supporters and reinforced the powerful bond between the club and the city.

Another striking display marked the anniversary of the club’s 2021 takeover, covering the entire Gallowgate End with a banner celebrating the new ownership group.

The message even included a playful dig at early scepticism surrounding the deal.

FGG Verdict: A new era of colour at St James’ Park

St James’ Park has always been known for its passionate atmosphere, but the rise of Wor Flags has added a spectacular visual dimension to the experience.

Whether celebrating players like Tonali, honouring local heroes, backing the manager, or welcoming Champions League football back to Tyneside, these displays capture the pride and unity of Newcastle supporters.

For many fans, the sight of a giant black-and-white banner rising above the crowd is now just as much a part of matchday as the roar that follows it.
