Brentford's Gtech Community Stadium could become an unlikely host of Champions League football next season after the Premier League club entered discussions over staging the home matches of Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk.
Although Brentford narrowly missed out on qualifying for Europe themselves, their west London home is now under consideration as a temporary venue for Shakhtar's UEFA Champions League campaign.
The Ukrainian side have been unable to host European fixtures in their own country because of the ongoing war and have spent recent seasons playing home matches across various cities in Europe.
If an agreement is reached, some of Europe's biggest clubs could be visiting the Gtech Community Stadium during the 2026-27 Champions League league phase.
Why are Shakhtar looking to play at Brentford?
Shakhtar have not been permitted to host UEFA fixtures in Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion of the country, forcing the club to find temporary homes abroad each season.
In recent years, they have staged European matches in countries including Poland, Germany and Slovenia, but are now exploring options in both the United Kingdom and Germany for the upcoming campaign. Brentford have emerged as one of the leading candidates, with discussions currently ongoing between the two clubs.
The Gtech Community Stadium is viewed as an attractive option because it meets UEFA's hosting requirements and is available for midweek fixtures after Brentford failed to qualify for European competition.
There is also an existing connection between Brentford and the Ukrainian community. The club has hosted community initiatives supporting displaced Ukrainian families, while midfielder Yehor Yarmolyuk has played an active role in those programmes. Brentford also hosted the Ukraine national team's preparations ahead of Euro 2024.
Shakhtar have confirmed they are in discussions over potential venues but have indicated that no final decision has yet been made.
What would it mean for Brentford?
Hosting Champions League matches would provide Brentford with an unexpected opportunity to showcase their stadium on one of football's biggest stages.
Opened in 2020, the 17,250-capacity Gtech Community Stadium has already established a reputation as one of the Premier League's most modern compact venues. Welcoming Champions League fixtures would further raise its profile while also generating additional matchday revenue outside Brentford's domestic schedule.
For supporters, the arrangement could offer the rare chance to watch Europe's elite clubs in west London despite the Bees not participating in continental competition themselves.
Any agreement would still require UEFA approval and coordination with local authorities, but the proposal highlights the flexibility modern stadiums can offer when exceptional circumstances arise.
FGG says: A win-win opportunity for both clubs
For Shakhtar, finding a suitable home remains a necessity rather than a choice, and Brentford could provide an excellent solution. The Gtech Community Stadium offers a modern football-specific venue in a city with outstanding transport links and a sizeable Ukrainian community.
From Brentford's perspective, hosting Champions League nights would generate additional income, increase the stadium's international profile and reinforce the club's reputation as a first-class venue operator.
While nothing has been finalised, the prospect of Champions League football arriving in Brentford is one of the more intriguing stadium stories of the summer.
