Burnley receive green light as plans for ‘radical’ fan upgrade to Turf Moor approved by council

Burnley have received the go-ahead for another improvement to Turf Moor, with a new entrance structure set to make accessing one of the stadium's stands easier.

The planned vomitory will provide a quicker route into the Barnfield Stand while also doubling up as an additional fire escape for supporters.

Turf Moor set to install new vomitories to improve fan access

Burnley Council has approved plans for a new vomitory at Turf Moor, which will provide improved access to the 4,500-capacity Barnfield Stand, as per the BBC.

The large staircase – described as a ‘radical' change – will allow supporters to reach the upper areas of the stand more efficiently, while also providing an additional emergency exit and improving safety around the stadium.

The structure will be clad in a black metal material on the outside, with Claret red detailing inside to complement Turf Moor's existing surroundings.

The project forms part of a wider series of improvements at the ground, including new LED signage around the stadium on Harry Potts Way.

However, work on the new vomitory cannot begin immediately.

The Coal Authority raised concerns over a largely unworked coal seam beneath Turf Moor and the potential impact additional loading could have on underground workings.

As a result, Burnley Council has attached a condition requiring an intrusive investigation before construction begins. This will involve at least three boreholes being drilled approximately 15 metres into solid bedrock.

The new access structure is therefore unlikely to appear overnight, but approval means the Championship outfit can now move forward with the next stage of the project.

It might not be the most glamorous stadium development, but improving how thousands of supporters enter and leave a stand can make a huge difference on matchdays.

The additional fire escape is another welcome benefit, although the coal-mining investigation means Burnley will have a little more work to do before fans can use the new vomitory.
