Camp Nou: Joan Laporta reacts as Barcelona win Champions League final hosting rights for 2029

Barcelona's Camp Nou was selected by UEFA as the host venue for the 2029 Champions League final on Tuesday, September 15.

The 2029 final will become the third Champions League final hosted at Barcelona's home ground, following the 1989 final won by AC Milan and the 1999 final won by Manchester United.

Following the announcement, Joan Laporta, president of FC Barcelona, spoke to the club's media and welcomed UEFA's decision.

2029 final decision a ‘major moment' for Barcelona

After UEFA's Executive Committee meeting in Thessaloniki, where the decision for Barcelona to host the 2029 final was made, Laporta spoke to the club's media.

The club president said the decision “is an immense source of pride for FC Barcelona and for all Barca fans”, while going on to say describe being chosen to host the Champions League final as a major moment for the club.

“This choice is also international recognition for the new Spotify Camp Nou, which is establishing itself as a world-class stadium, at the forefront of experience, technology, connectivity, accessibility and services.”

Laporta also highlighted the importance of UEFA's decision for the ongoing improvement in relations between the European organisation and Barcelona, which has steadily grown since the club moved away from the Super League project.

Laporta also thanked the institutions that helped support the club's bid to host the 2029 final, saying “I would especially like to thanks Barcelona City Council, the Generalitat de Catalunya and the RFEF for their support for this bid.

“It is an achievement that we have reached together and one that projects Barcelona, Catalonia and FC Barcelona to the world.”

Although the stadium has been selected to host the 2029 final, the full scale of the redeveloped Camp Nou is yet to be seen, with work on the third-tier stands and installation of the roof not expected to be completed until early 2028.

Once the work is fully complete, Barcelona's home stadium will be able to support a capacity of 105,000 spectators.

The 2029 final will mark the first Champions League final held at Barcelona's iconic stadium since the memorable 1999 final, which saw Manchester United score two late goals to come from behind and win against Bayern Munich, completing a historic treble.
