Celtic fan coach catches fire in terrifying scenes after Old Firm defeat

A coach carrying Celtic supporters caught fire in Glasgow shortly after Sunday’s Old Firm derby, forcing fans to evacuate as emergency services rushed to tackle the blaze.

The incident happened at around 2.25pm on the Clyde Gateway, a short distance from Celtic Park. The coach was travelling away from the stadium following Celtic’s 1-0 defeat by Rangers when flames were reported at the rear of the vehicle.

Thick black smoke quickly filled the air as the fire spread, with footage from the scene showing the coach engulfed in flames. Fans on board were able to leave the vehicle safely before firefighters arrived. Police Scotland confirmed there were no reports of casualties following the incident.

Two fire engines attended the scene, while the blaze caused disruption on the busy Glasgow route as emergency crews worked to bring it under control. The coach was carrying members of the Motherwell 9 in a Row Celtic Supporters’ Club, with families and children reportedly among those travelling home after the match.

McLean’s Coaches, which operates the vehicle, later said it believed the fire may have been caused by vandalism. The company stressed that no accusations were being made against the passengers and said the circumstances had been reported to the relevant authorities. The vehicle was subsequently recovered and is due to undergo a full inspection as investigations continue.

The fire came at the end of a difficult afternoon for Celtic supporters. Rangers claimed a 1-0 victory at Celtic Park through Ryan Naderi’s first-half goal, completing a second win over their city rivals in the space of eight days. The result added to Celtic’s difficult run, while Rangers’ victory reduced the gap between the two sides at the top of the Scottish Premiership to two points.

For the home supporters, however, the post-match bus fire provided an unexpected and frightening end to an already disappointing derby day.

A day to forget for Celtic fans

After a promising start to the season, Celtic's form over the last couple of weeks has not been that of a team which will run away with the Scottish Premiership this season. Two Old Firm defeats in a week is far from ideal, and their fans will be expecting a response in the coming weeks.
