The new Championship season is now 16 games old, and as we enter the middle part of the season, we are beginning to get an understanding of which teams are going to be competing for promotion and which teams are going to be floundering at the bottom.
There are surprises at both ends of the table. Sheffield United, last season's playoff finalists, are currently in the bottom three, while Stoke City, a side tipped for the drop at the start of the season, are just three points away from being in the automatic promotion positions.
Leading the way at the moment is Coventry City, who currently boast a seven-point lead over Middlesbrough. If the Sky Blues continue playing the same way, then they could run away with it and have promotion secured by Easter.

Leicester City are at the top of the attendance ranking in the Championship, despite the Foxes not being as dominant as they were last time they were in the second tier of English football. Still, 29,871 people on average turned out to watch Leicester at their home ground so far this season.
At the very bottom are Wrexham, with an average attendance of 10,620. The reason for this is the ongoing development at one end of the Racecourse Ground and the stadium's generally low capacity, which can hold only 13,341 fans.
Week 16 2025/26 Championship attendances
Week 16 of the Championship was the first round of fixtures after the November international break. After a two-week stint without club football, thousands of supporters flocked to stadiums up and down the country to see their favourite teams back in action.
The highest attendance in the Championship this week came from Hillsborough for the Steel City derby between Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United. In total, 32,740 fans turned out to watch the visitors run out as comfortable 3-0 winners.
Unsurprisingly, the highest attendance at a Championship match came at a playoff final at Wembley Stadium. Back in 2014, 87,348 fans turned up at the national stadium to watch Derby County take on QPR, with Bobby Zamora famously scoring a last-minute winner for the Hoops.
