Earlier today, it was revealed that Coventry City have agreed a £1.6m deal with Coventry City Council to acquire a key piece of land next to the Coventry Building Society Arena.
The land, a council-owned car park, sits on the opposite side of the A444 to the stadium, and has room for around 900 cars.
Although the club has not published plans for what it will do with the land, the rumour is that they will use it to help regenerate the wider area. With respect to the stadium itself, could this pave the way for expansion work?
How big could the CBS Arena become?
As the newly purchased land is on the opposite side of the A444 from the CBS Arena, this will have no direct impact on any potential expansion.
However, if the club are looking at regeneration work, that may suggest they expect more visitors to the area in the future. Therefore, it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that a stadium expansion is on the agenda.
The good news for Coventry City is that they currently have more than enough land to accommodate an expansion. The stadium currently has a capacity of 32,609 for football matches, and they could, in theory, increase this to around 35,000 by just reconfiguring the seating plan.
🚨 Coventry City Set To Buy Council Land In £1.6m Deal – Coventry set to complete a £1.6m purchase of council-owned land near the stadium – Deal covers Car Park C, opposite the CBS Arena across the A444 – Expected to be signed off by the council at a cabinet meeting on October 13 – Described as a "win-win" after years of conflict with the club's previous owners – Payment spread over 10 years, with funds going to the club's charity, not the council – Sky Blues in the Community to receive around £160,000 annually for city sport initiatives – Owner Doug King says the deal will "simplify future regeneration" of the area – Valuation for the land agreed via consultants Lambert Smith Hampton – No public redevelopment plans confirmed yet for the car park site – Past proposed uses have included an indoor ski slope and hotel developments

For anything more significant, such as an increase to 40,000+, a complete renovation of one or more of the stands would be necessary, which logistically could cause a few headaches. This is because the space around the stadium is already heavily developed. Increasing capacity means dealing with:
- Demolishing/moving the Arena Shopping Park
- Planning permission and safety certification
- Pedestrian circulation and evacuation capacity
- Turnstiles and concourses
- Toilets and catering
- Segregation between supporters
- Hospitality/media requirements
- Roads and public transport
- Structural limitations of the existing stands
Do Coventry City need to expand the CBS Arena?
At this moment in time, it is difficult to argue that Coventry need an expanded stadium. When the plans for the new stadium were first unveiled in the late 90s, the plan was to build a 40,000-seat stadium, but average attendances since the Sky Blues moved in prove that this would have been too much.
Empty seats have been common at the CBS Arena ever since the club made it their home, a trend that has continued in the Premier League.
The only point in which an expansion should be seriously considered is if Coventry can establish themselves as Premier League regulars in the coming years.
