England fans & Ireland fans labelled ‘disgusting’ for booing anthems

Social media was not best pleased with England and Ireland fans, labelling them “disgusting” as both sets booed the other's anthem.

While some issues were always expected for the game, fans were unhappy to see the national anthems disrespected.

While the night saw England top the group and gain promotion back to the top of the Nations League pile, it started off negatively. The Irish anthem was first up and met with boos from the home support. When it was time for the England national anthem, Irish fans were quick to bite back and boo the anthem.

Fans at home, however, were less than impressed “Football “fans” who boo the opposition's national anthem are morons” said one fan. That sentiment was echoed throughout X (formerly Twitter)

The national anthem of England has been a hot topic recently. Interim boss Lee Carsley opted not to sing it during his time as coach.

“I was always really focused on the game and my first actions of the game. I really found that in that period I was wary about my mind wandering off. I fully respect both anthems and understand how much they mean to both countries. It’s something I am really respectful of.”

Ireland fans were already not happy

Ireland fans also took the issue before the players even got out onto the pitch, however. Broadcast on the screens at Wembley were Tony Adams and Aaron Lennon, who drew the Irish fans' jeers.

When asked what they thought the score would be, Adams was quick to give England a big win at 3-0. Lennon was also asked, giving the same scoreline. Both times their answers were met with boos from the Irish fans in the stadium.

England fans have the last laugh

As for the match itself. It turns out Adams and Lennon were being a little kind to Ireland. England secured a 5-0 victory in the end, earning promotion back to the League A. Ireland ended the group stage in third, meaning they remain in League B.
