England supporters heading to Mexico City for the Three Lions' World Cup Round of 16 clash have been urged to remain vigilant after two fans described a “terrifying” experience in the capital.

Thousands are expected to make the journey for the blockbuster meeting with Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca, but one couple have warned travelling supporters to take extra care in large crowds.

England fans warned about Mexico City after one couple's bad experience

England couple, Jo Lewis and Gary Taylor, have issued a stark warning after encountering dangerous crowding during a previous visit to Mexico City earlier in the tournament.

Speaking to the Mirror, the couple described spending four hours attempting to enter an official FanFest before becoming caught in a huge surge of supporters trying to pass through a small entrance.

Lewis said her feet were lifted from the ground as she was swept forward by the crowd and separated from her partner, describing the incident as the “worst experience” of her life.

Taylor, who has attended hundreds of Tottenham Hotspur and England matches, was equally critical of the organisation and described Mexico City as the worst experience he had encountered while following football.

The couple estimated that thousands of people were attempting to squeeze through a narrow entrance after joining an enormous queue for the FanFest.

They also claimed the organisation, policing and security they encountered in Mexico City fell well below what they had experienced during the United States leg of their 2026 World Cup trip.

Their warning comes after three people reportedly died from suffocation during huge celebrations following Mexico's knockout victory over Ecuador, when more than one million supporters were said to have taken to the streets of the capital.

Around 5,000 England fans are expected to be in Mexico City for the last-16 meeting, with the Three Lions preparing to face the co-hosts in what promises to be an intense atmosphere at the Azteca.

FGG says: England fans should stay safe and vigilant in Mexico City

Watching England face Mexico at the Estadio Azteca will be a bucket-list experience for many travelling supporters, but the accounts of dangerous crowding during the tournament should not be ignored.

Fans should remain vigilant, keep track of official travel and security advice and take particular care around large gatherings before and after the match.

Mexico City should provide an unforgettable setting for one of England's biggest games in years, but supporters must put their own safety first while enjoying the occasion.
