Everton supporters made their feelings clear after Manchester City equalised in dramatic fashion on Monday evening, with a familiar chant ringing around the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Jeremy Doku’s 97th-minute strike denied the hosts a famous win, but the reaction from the stands quickly turned from heartbreak to anger as frustration spilled over in the closing moments.

The flashpoint came deep into added time, when Doku cut inside and fired home to make it 3-3 in a pulsating encounter.

Moments later, large sections of the Everton crowd could be heard chanting: “Premier League corrupt as f***”

It’s a chant that has increasingly become a go-to expression of frustration across English football, not just at Everton.

Supporters from several clubs have adopted it in response to controversial decisions, inconsistencies, or simply moments that go against their side.

In this case, the late nature of the equaliser, coming in the 97th minute, appeared to be the trigger, with fans questioning how long the game had been allowed to continue.

FGG says: Emotion understandable — but the timing argument doesn’t quite hold

There's no doubt conceding that late is gut-wrenching, especially after Everton had done so much right to put themselves in a winning position. The emotional reaction from the stands is completely understandable in that moment.

But it’s worth remembering that added time is a minimum, not a maximum. Delays for goals, substitutions, injuries, and time-wasting are routinely factored in, meaning games often extend beyond the number initially shown on the board.

The chant itself has taken on a life of its own in recent seasons, partly down to genuine frustration, but it doesn’t always reflect what’s actually happening on the pitch.

For Everton, the bigger frustration will be letting a two-goal lead slip late on. That’s where the real damage was done, regardless of how long was added at the end.
