Everton make special request for final ever Goodison Park match

We're now just one month away from Everton's final ever match at Goodison Park with the fixture with Southampton currently pencilled in for Sunday, 18 May.

While the specific date of the fixture is yet to be confirmed by the Premier League and their broadcasters, it's set to be an emotional one for Evertonians and the club are determined to ensure the famous old stadium gets the send-off it deserves.

As a result, Everton have lodged a request to Liverpool Council to allow the stadium to remain open for 90 minutes longer than usual after the match to allow fans to say goodbye properly to Goodison Park.

Everton's Goodison Park request: Stadium to potentially stay open for longer

According to the Liverpool Echo, the city's licensing department has received an application from Everton to change the stadium's licensing rules for the match against Southampton. If the request is approved, then Everton will be able to sell alcohol in the bars beyond full-time for an extra 90 minutes.

Whether the request will be approved or not at this stage is unknown but one factor that could scupper plans are the broadcasters. If the match is selected for a night game, then the latest Goodison Park would only be able to stay open until 11 pm. which would only be around an hour after the match finishes.

Approving such a deal would allow Everton's supporters to soak up the atmosphere and aura of Goodison Park for a final time before they move to Bramley-Moore Dock next season. However, if recent reports are to be believed, then Goodison Park may avoid demolition which would be brilliant news for Evertonians.

FGG says: This has Sky meddling written all over it

This is a great idea from Everton and the council will be hard-pressed to find a good enough reason to refuse the request. However, they may not have to, as you can bet your house that the broadcasters are going to get involved and make this a Monday night fixture ‘under the lights'.
