Fresh footage from Hillsborough has revealed one of the first visible signs of Sheffield Wednesday's summer improvement programme, with work now underway to install a brand-new playing surface ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
The pitch replacement comes during a significant period of change at the club, with new ownership overseeing a range of upgrades both on and off the field as preparations continue for the new season.
Hillsborough Stadium get new pitch for the 2026/27 season
A latest video from Hillsborough Stadium shows the existing pitch being removed as work begins on installing a new playing surface for the upcoming season.
The upgrade forms part of a wider programme of improvements planned under new owner David Storch and Arise Capital Partners, who have already outlined ambitions to modernise several areas of the stadium.
Alongside the pitch replacement, improvements to water systems, stadium infrastructure and the installation of what has been described as ‘world-class' WiFi are also planned.
The timing of the pitch works could also explain why Sheffield Wednesday may be handed an away fixture on the opening weekend of the season.
Former joint administrator Kris Wigfield revealed that while the club was under administration, a request had been made for Wednesday to start the campaign away from home in order to provide additional time for essential stadium works to be completed.
Although that request was made before the takeover was finalised, the ongoing pitch installation means an opening-day away fixture would still make practical sense if additional time is required to get the surface fully match-ready.
FGG says: Wednesday's fresh start needs visible improvements
After everything that Wednesday supporters have endured in recent years, seeing tangible improvements around Hillsborough will be welcomed.
A new pitch might not be the most glamorous upgrade, but it is one of the most important. The playing surface is at the heart of every matchday experience and provides an immediate sign that investment is finally being made.
More broadly, the work represents the beginning of what many fans will hope is a new era for the club under its new ownership.
There is still plenty more to be done around Hillsborough, but every stadium improvement completed this summer helps build confidence that the club is moving in the right direction both on and off the pitch.
