The Principality Stadium has completed the largest solar panel installation of any sports venue in the UK after fitting more than 3,000 panels across its iconic roof.
The £1 million project is expected to generate significant savings for the venue while helping future-proof one of Britain's most recognisable sporting arenas.
Principality Stadium completes landmark roof project
The Welsh Rugby Union has installed 3,296 solar panels across approximately 6,000 square metres of roof space at the Cardiff venue.
According to the WRU, the system is expected to save between £300,000 and £400,000 per year on energy bills and generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 50 matchdays annually.
The panels have been operational since February and recently enabled the stadium to operate completely off-grid during periods of strong sunshine, with excess power even being exported back into the grid.
While best known as the home of Welsh rugby, the Principality Stadium has also hosted major football matches over the years, including domestic cup finals, international fixtures and UEFA competitions, alongside some of the world's biggest concerts and events.
This year's Community Shield clash between Premier League champions Arsenal and FA Cup winners Manchester City is also set to be held at the Principality on August 16th.
The WRU believes the investment could pay for itself within two to three years, with savings being reinvested into the sport.
FGG says: A smart upgrade for an iconic venue
Stadium redevelopment isn't always about adding seats or building new stands.
This is a different type of investment, but one that makes plenty of sense for a venue that hosts football, rugby and major events throughout the year.
Reducing operating costs while improving sustainability is a win-win, and the fact that the Principality Stadium now boasts the largest solar installation of any UK sports ground only adds another impressive milestone to one of Britain's most iconic venues.
