Valencia’s long-delayed stadium project is entering one of its most important periods yet.

With just over a year until the planned opening, the club now faces a crucial few months.

Valencia CF face race to get Nou Mestalla ready for 2027 opening

Work on Nou Mestalla is continuing at pace, with Valencia still targeting a summer 2027 opening for the new stadium.

But despite visible progress on the ground, the project has now reached what local reports describe as a ‘decisive' phase.

The biggest issue is not the 70,000-seater stadium itself, but the surrounding development.

For Nou Mestalla to be allowed to open, construction must begin on two nearby towers planned beside the stadium. Those buildings are expected to form part of the evacuation routes needed for supporters entering and leaving the ground.

Although the towers will not be finished by 2027, work on them must at least have reached ground level before Valencia can stage matches at the new stadium.

That means time is tight.

The site for the towers has already been sold, but the developers are still waiting for planning approval from the city authorities before work can start.

At the same time, Valencia are also pushing ahead with plans to sell the land occupied by the current Mestalla Stadium.

The club hope that the sale could raise more than €150 million (£130 million) and help fund the final stages of the move.

FGG says: After 16 years of delays, this is finally the moment of truth

Nou Mestalla has been hanging over Valencia for so long that many supporters had almost stopped believing it would ever happen.

Now, suddenly, the finish line is in sight, but so are the risks.

The stadium itself appears to be progressing well, but the wider project around it is now just as important.

If those towers and the surrounding infrastructure do not move quickly enough, Valencia could find themselves with a nearly-finished stadium that still cannot open.

After all these years, that would be an extraordinary twist.

The next few months may end up deciding whether Nou Mestalla finally becomes reality in 2027 or whether the saga drags on even longer.
