Leeds City Council have cancelled a meeting which was set to make a decision on the stadiums plans of Leeds United.

The newly-promoted side are plying their trade at Elland Road, which currently holds just under 38,000 spectators in Yorkshire.

There are major plans from the ownership group of Leeds for a stadium expansion, taking the capacity to a proposed 53,000.

Daniel Farke's side have fared relatively well at their Elland Road base in recent times, beating Club World cup winners Chelsea.

After that, the Whites managed a last-gasp draw against Premier League holders Liverpool, resulting in an interview outburst from Mohamed Salah.

Following a 1-1 draw at the home of Brentford on the weekend, Leeds return to Elland Road to host Crystal Palace on Saturday night.

Leeds City Council delay Elland Road decision

After submitting an application for their Elland Road expansion in July, Leeds United were set to learn of the council's decision on the proposal today (December 16).

However, Leeds City Council have released a statement, confirming that the City Plans Panel Meet has been postponed until after the turn of the New Year.

“We are working closely with the applicant with the intention of taking this to City Plans Panel at the appropriate time once outstanding matters have been resolved,” a spokesperson for the council said.

“A meeting of City Plans Panel is scheduled monthly with the next being January 8, with a meeting also scheduled for February 5, 2026.”

What are the outstanding matters?

It is understood that Leeds City Council are overall in support of plans to extend Elland Road's capacity past 50,000 in the near future.

However, members of the committee have concerns around the impact of the redevelopment on transport in the area.

A major increase in capacity would likely led to more traffic on the road and congestion, with the council looking to ensure the safety of the public.

Looking to work with the local authorities, Leeds United are considering the employment of new staff who would be dedicated to the issue of transport.

According to Leeds Live, there are also suggestions of closing the road Elland Road pre-match and increasing the scope of no drop-off zones around the ground.

FGG says: Big plans take time

Given the complexity of redeveloping an existing ground, it is no surprise to see that Leeds City Council are taking their time to properly consider the application of Leeds United.

The club's American owners are likely to be annoyed following the cancellation of another meeting, although they are confident that a positive outcome will arrive in 2026.
