Luton Town new stadium becomes a reality
The club had been approved planning consent in 2019, though they've now looked to deliver a complete re-design. Not only does it now include the stadium, but also a much wider site project.
The new stadium will be in the heart of the city as Luton Town FC looks to establish itself as a key part of Luton as a town.
Luton Town Football Club chief executive Gary Sweet said, ‘This is our new home for generations.‘ The news is massive for Luton Town FC as they look to maintain the momentum that they gained from promotion to the Premier League. Gary Sweet continued, ‘The wider benefits to the club and the town are so far-reaching, economically, as well as pride, wellbeing and social harmony. The delivery of the stadium would elevate the club and town and guarantee the long-term sustainability of our football club. We sought to locate our new home so it's a focal point for the wider community and to accelerate our town centre's regeneration‘
With plans now approved, the club can begin the process of building the new stadium ahead of the planned 2027 date of its opening. Lastly, 2020 Developments chief operating officer Michael Moran commented, ‘Having already secured outline planning consent in 2019, we have worked through a complete re-design of the stadium concept alongside bringing forward the wider site where we are busy now with groundworks and putting the necessary infrastructure in place. After this evening it's hoped the goal of having an iconic stadium in the heart of the town centre is one step closer.'
FGG says: A positive future for the plucky underdogs
Luton Town's rise up the English football pyramid has long been admirable. It all got a little more serious when Luton Town made its way to the Premier League.
While the club's time in the Premier League ended in relegation, they were a memorable away fixture, given the reputation of Kenilwood Road as a stadium. Now, the club is set to move to a bigger, more central stadium, and they are looking to become one of the established top-level clubs in England.
