Man United, Spurs make decision on trophy parade plans ahead of Europa League final

Man Utd and Tottenham will do battle in the Europa League final on Wednesday, 21 May, and both sets of supporters are now starting to feel the nerves as the countdown to kick-off begins.

It's a monumental night for both clubs as the outcome of the match will determine which club has had a good season and which one has had a complete disaster.

Considering the magnitude of the game and the fact that a European trophy is on the line, are both clubs planning a trophy parade should they come out on top?

Man Utd Europa League parade plans

According to reports in the UK media, there are no plans for a Manchester United parade should they win the final in Bilbao. Instead, the club plans to celebrate their hypothetical victory with a low-key barbecue at Carrington, the club's training ground.

The decision not to have a parade around Manchester shouldn't come as a surprise or be used as a stick to beat INEOS with. Parades are far from the norm at Manchester United. They have only held two in the past 25 years – one in 2011 to mark the club's 19th Premier League title and another in 2013 to celebrate the end of Sir Alex Ferguson's tenure at the club.

They didn't hold a parade for the vast majority of their title triumphs in the 1990s and 2000s and didn't even put one on when they won the Champions League in 2008. It would therefore be slightly unusual, and uncomfortable given their league position, if they were to celebrate with a parade for winning the Europa League.

Tottenham Europa League parade plans

According to the Mirror, Tottenham are planning on having a parade through London if they come back from Bilbao with the trophy. This decision feels like a more logical one, given that Tottenham haven't won a trophy since 2006 and haven't won a European one since 1984.

At the time of writing, there are no details of the trophy parade in terms of dates, times and routes, but the club more than likely has it all mapped out so they can release the information quickly should they win the final.

FGG Says: Common sense prevails all around

Manchester United were never going to hold a parade for winning the Europa League, with the official line coming out from the club in recent weeks being that winning the competition wouldn't make up for what has been a dismal season domestically. For Tottenham, the win would be considered one of the biggest achievements in the club's history, so of course, they should mark that with a parade.
