Napoli handed major Euro 2032 boost after £43m Stadio Diego Armando Maradona decision

Napoli have received a major financial boost for the redevelopment of Stadio Diego Armando Maradona after the City of Naples committed money towards the project.

The funding completes the investment target for the planned transformation, which is aimed at strengthening Naples' bid to host Euro 2032 matches.

The City of Naples has granted around £43m in municipal funds towards the redevelopment of Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, completing the investment target for the project.

The funding follows £130m provided by the regional council of Campania, with the redevelopment now fully financed according to the project's investment target.

The Municipality of Naples described the stadium as a major part of the city's heritage and a venue for significant sporting events, while also highlighting Napoli's two league titles in the last three years.

The redevelopment would increase capacity from 54,732 to 63,300 and be delivered across three phases. Plans include reconstructing the third tier, creating a new lower tier and extending the roof by 15 metres.

New hospitality areas and underground parking for VIP and hospitality facilities are also planned, alongside new outdoor green spaces.

The project also includes more than 5,300 square metres of integrated photovoltaic panels, expected to generate more than 1.75 million kWh of electricity each year.

A rainwater recovery system would also collect and reuse more than 25 million litres annually.

Naples is one of 13 Italian cities competing for five Euro 2032 hosting allocations, with Italy co-hosting the tournament alongside Turkey.

Candidature documents have been submitted by cities including Naples, Rome, Milan, Turin and Florence, with the Italian Football Federation aiming to finalise the five venues by October 1st.

Securing the £43m municipal contribution gives Napoli and the city of Naples greater financial certainty over the planned redevelopment.

The proposed increase in capacity and extensive improvements to hospitality, infrastructure and sustainability would significantly change the stadium while retaining its existing role as Napoli's home.

The immediate focus will now turn to the Euro 2032 selection process, with Naples competing against other Italian cities for one of five hosting allocations.
