New Man Utd stadium concern emerges as £2bn plan could create future ownership problems

A new concern regarding Manchester United's stadium plan has emerged which could create future problems for the club's owners.

Manchester United's intention to leave Old Trafford in favour of a new stadium was first announced in March 2025, with the club unveiling plans to construct a new 100,000 capacity ground next door to their current home.

The club have faced several obstacles in the year since the announcement, including disputes with the owner of a key piece land needed for the development, as well as concerns regarding the overall cost of the project.

Now, a fresh concern has emerged which could create problems for Manchester United's current co-owners in the future.

Manchester United's £2bn plan for their new stadium could reportedly create future problems for co-owners, the Glazer family and Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

While the club have announced that the stadium will be funded privately, an architectural industry expert has claimed that the funding of the stadium could create issues for the owners in the future.

As of February, financial records revealed that the club's debt stood at £1.3bn, and the expert has shared that this means it is unlikely that the owners will look to fund the project through conventional debt or shared equity, as this would dilute the owners' shares.

The expert went on to say that, instead, they may look to a subsidiary stadium company that is partly owned by the club and partly by external investors, as this would then allow for external investment to pay for the project.

However, this would mean that if they attempted to sell Manchester United in the future, then they would not be getting the full price of both the club and the stadium, as they would only be able to sell whatever percentage of the stadium the club owns.
