The future of Newcastle United's stadium remains one of the biggest unanswered questions on Tyneside, and the city's new council leader has now addressed the ongoing speculation.

While debate continues over whether the Magpies will redevelop St James' Park or move to a new purpose-built stadium, Newcastle City Council says it is still waiting for the club to reveal its intentions.

Newcastle City Council waiting for clarity on stadium plans

New council leader Colin Ferguson says it is impossible to take a position on Newcastle's stadium future until the club publicly confirms what it wants to do.

Speaking to ChronicleLive after taking office, Ferguson insisted he would not speculate on proposals that have yet to be formally presented, despite ongoing discussions around a potential new stadium and concerns surrounding Leazes Park.

The possibility of a new stadium being built on the historic parkland has already generated significant opposition, with more than 28,000 people signing a petition calling for the space to be protected.

Ferguson stressed that Newcastle United's success is beneficial for the city but reiterated that any assessment can only happen once concrete plans emerge.

He said: “I cannot speculate on the shape of thin air, the club needs to say what they want to do and then we need to have a look at it.”

The council leader also addressed questions surrounding Newcastle's Saudi-backed ownership, stating he would continue to speak out on human rights concerns where necessary, while acknowledging that the council has no control over who owns the football club.

FGG says: A final stadium decision still feels some way off

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from these latest comments is that Newcastle do not appear to be actively discussing detailed stadium proposals with the council yet.

Given the scale of any potential redevelopment or relocation project, meaningful engagement with local authorities would be expected long before formal planning applications are submitted.

That suggests supporters may still have some time to wait before a final decision is made.

Whether the future lies with an expanded St James' Park or a brand-new stadium elsewhere, the signs continue to point towards a process that remains some distance from reaching its conclusion.
