Newcastle United supporters delivered a memorable display ahead of one of the most anticipated Tyne-Wear derbies in years.

But what unfolded on the pitch failed to match the energy and creativity shown in the stands.

Newcastle fans had stunning pre-game display before Sunderland defeat

Ahead of kick-off at St James' Park, the Magpies' faithful unveiled an eye-catching tifo aimed at rivals Sunderland.

Organised by supporter group Wor Flags, the display featured the cheeky 11-word message: “Welcome to the region's capital, you've been gone for so long!” – a nod to Sunderland’s long absence from these top-flight derby clashes.

The tifo set the tone for what should have been a charged and emotional occasion, with the home crowd playing their part in creating a hostile atmosphere.

However, despite the pre-match build-up, Newcastle were unable to deliver on the pitch, slipping to a disappointing late 2-1 defeat that left fans frustrated.

FGG says: Wor Flags tifo deserved better from Newcastle players

The scale and quality of the display showed just how much this fixture means to Newcastle supporters.

However, this is where frustration inevitably creeps in for fans. When the stands deliver that level of backing, there is an expectation that the players match it with intensity, fight and commitment.

Instead, the performance fell well short, and club legend Alan Shearer did not hold back in his assessment, labelling the performance “pathetic, weak, lazy,” which was a damning verdict that underlined the gulf between the supporters’ effort and the players’ display.

That contrast is what will sting Magpies fans the most, as derby matches are about more than just quality – they are about desire, pride and getting one over on your arch-rivals.

On this occasion, the supporters did their job, but the players, by most accounts, didn’t come close.
