Oxford United have now received a significant boost in their long-running pursuit to build a new stadium after a High Court judge refused permission for a judicial review of the project.
The decision represents another positive step for the U's, although campaigners opposing the development have requested that the case is reconsidered at an oral hearing.
Oxford United provide update on new stadium plans
The U's have confirmed that the initial High Court challenge against planning permission for their proposed new 16,000-capacity stadium has been rejected.
The League One club revealed that the judge considered the grounds submitted by campaign group Friends of Stratfield Brake to be “not reasonably arguable”.
Arguments surrounding woodland adjacent to the proposed Triangle site were described as “unsustainable”, while concerns raised over matchday traffic management measures were also found to provide no valid grounds for a judicial review.
However, the legal process is not completely over. Friends of Stratfield Brake has served a renewal notice requesting an oral permission hearing, where the group can ask a judge to reconsider the initial refusal.
No date has yet been scheduled, although Oxford say the Court's target is for such hearings to take place within one month of receiving a renewal notice.
The club is continuing to work with Cherwell District Council and remains confident that the challenge will ultimately be dismissed without progressing to a full judicial review.
Several fans reacted to the “good news” on social media, claiming that it is a timely boost ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
FGG says: Oxford stadium plans receive welcome boost
This is a welcome development for Oxford and their supporters, who have endured years of uncertainty over where the club will play once its Kassam Stadium lease expires in 2028.
There is still another legal hurdle to clear, but the High Court's initial rejection is undoubtedly positive news for the project.
With time becoming increasingly important, Oxford will hope the remaining process can be resolved quickly and allow attention to turn towards finally delivering their long-awaited new home.
