PIF push ahead with new Newcastle United stadium plans as fresh timeline now emerges

Newcastle United's owners remain committed to a major new stadium project despite a summer of uncertainty around the club.

The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) is now targeting 2030 for construction to begin on the long-awaited project.

Newcastle's majority owners PIF have reportedly remained “steadfast and committed” to plans for a new stadium, with sources close to the ownership group believing there could be “spades in the ground” by 2030.

The club has been exploring its options for a new home for several years, with a new-build stadium increasingly favoured because it would offer greater flexibility over capacity, hospitality and design than redeveloping St James' Park.

The latest report from The i says PIF, which has invested close to £1 billion in Newcastle since completing its takeover in 2021, sees the club as one of its strongest investments and has no plans to sell its majority stake.

The ownership group has also just committed £190 million alongside the Reuben family towards a new training facility at Woolsington Hall, demonstrating its long-term commitment to developing Newcastle's infrastructure.

The stadium project remains more complicated, however, with legal, planning and logistical challenges contributing to the lengthy decision-making process.

PIF is understood to be considering bringing in minority investment to help fund the project, with private equity firms Arctos Partners and KKR among those reported to have held discussions.

While no final decision has been made on the stadium, those close to the process believe construction could begin within three years.

The planning process alone is expected to take at least a year once a formal proposal is submitted.

The new training ground investment is another clear indication that PIF's commitment extends beyond the first-team squad and is certainly for the long-term, while a new stadium could ultimately transform the club's commercial potential.

There is still plenty to be decided, but Magpies fans can at least take some encouragement from the fact that the project remains firmly on the agenda.
