Ipswich Town have outlined a series of significant improvement works at Portman Road as preparations continue ahead of the club's return to Premier League football.

While much of the attention surrounding promoted clubs often centres on transfers and on-pitch plans, the Tractor Boys are also using the summer period to make substantial changes inside the stadium aimed at improving both supporter experience and accessibility.

Ipswich Town get to work on Portman Road improvements ahead of Premier League return

Ipswich Town have confirmed that major improvement works are underway at Portman Road, with a strong focus on enhancing facilities for disabled supporters and introducing new safe‑standing areas.

One of the biggest changes will see disabled seating in the West Stand moved from its current position near the Sir Alf Ramsey South Stand to a new area closer to the Sir Bobby Robson North Stand, supported by a dedicated reception and entrance off Sir Alf Ramsey Way.

The project also includes accessible changing spaces, improved routes to concourses and seating, additional accessible toilets and increased capacity within those facilities. Disability Liaison Officer Lee Smith said the upgrades were prioritised following a review during the club’s Premier League season.

Further work is taking place to upgrade West Stand toilets, with more improvements outside the stadium bowl to be announced.

Safe standing will be installed across the lower tier of the Sir Bobby Robson North Stand, alongside new disabled seating at the front of the stand, meaning some season ticket holders will be relocated.

Visiting supporters will remain in the Cobbold Stand, with the away allocation expanded to meet Premier League requirements. The club will contact any supporters affected by seating changes directly.

FGG says: Portman Road gets some much-needed upgrades

For newly promoted clubs, stadium improvements often become a delicate balancing act between meeting Premier League standards and genuinely enhancing the matchday experience. What’s striking here is that Ipswich’s plans go well beyond simply adding capacity or ticking off regulatory requirements.

The emphasis on accessibility feels especially important. Safe standing will grab plenty of headlines, but the investment in facilities for disabled supporters could prove even more transformative in the long run.

There will inevitably be some short‑term disruption for supporters who need to move seats, and that’s never ideal, but with projects of this scale, it is almost unavoidable.

For a club returning to the Premier League, ensuring Portman Road evolves alongside the team itself looks not just sensible, but necessary, and this is a strong start.
