Championship promotion-chasers Coventry City set a new attendance record at the Coventry Building Society Arena in Saturday's home meeting with Stoke City, as their bid to climb to the Premier League gathered pace.

As reported by Coventry Live, the Sky Blues drew a record crowd to see a dramatic victory and pull further clear at the top of the Championship.

Coventry City take step closer to Premier League in front of record crowd

Coventry City manager Frank Lampard hailed his side's performance as they picked up a fourth straight Championship victory on Saturday against Stoke City, giving their hopes of promotion to the Premier League another major boost in the process.

While the club's overall attendance record remains the 51,455 achieved at their former home at Highfield Road in 1965, their previous record at the Coventry Building Society Arena, their home since 2005 – aside from brief spells away during ownership disputes – stood at 31,452 for a Championship meeting with Middlesbrough in May 2025.

That was overtaken at the weekend, with Coventry Live reporting a gate of 31,516 as they went in search of a fourth straight win with a chance to move eight points clear at the summit of England's second tier.

The bumper crowd eventually got their side over the line, as Coventry sat level at a goal apiece heading into injury time before Jack Rudoni netted a winner deep into injury time.

Speaking about the growing mood in the Sky Blues' camp, particularly in front of growing home crowds, Lampard said: “Yeah, I think spirit was one thing but quality was the other. We were fantastic today, one of our best home performances from the first minute. We should have been two or three goals ahead at half-time for our play but football sometimes kicks you where you don’t want it to.”

Has Coventry Building Society Arena helped Sky Blues' promotion push?

Aiming to build on last season's playoff loss and make their long-awaited return to the Premier League, Coventry City have seen improvements both off-pitch and on-pitch.

Compared to the 27,812 average home attendance in the 2024-25 term, Frank Lampard's side are currently averaging 30,140 supporters at home games, the most in England's second tier and over 2,000 clear of second-placed Derby County, despite only boasting the league's fifth largest stadium.

That is undoubtedly a factor in the Sky Blues boasting the division's best home record so far this season, helping put themselves clear at the summit of the division having won 13 and only lost one of their 17 league outings at the CBS Arena so far this term.

FGG says: Continued signs of growth in Coventry

As recently as 2021, Coventry City were playing their football away from the Coventry Building Society Arena, but they have since reached an FA Cup semi-final, returned to bumper home crowds and established themselves as dominant Championship frontrunners.

Alongside the major on-pitch improvement in their journey back to the Premier League under Frank Lampard, the Sky Blues are seeing the effects in the stands with increasing community support and a club on the whole only continuing to grow and strengthen.
