PSG new stadium plans are in full swing as the club looks at three potential sights to replace the Parc des Princes.
Since 1974, Paris Saint-Germain has played at the 48,229-capacity Parc des Princes stadium. However, the club's recent rise on the global football stage has caused its owners to consider potential new options.
For now, the club is eying up three locations in Paris: Saint-Cloud (3 miles away), Montigny-le-Bretonneux (15 miles), and Poissy (18 miles). However, this could be posturing to convince the city government to let them buy the stadium, which they currently rent.
PSG new 60,000 capacity stadium
PSG is a club that is still very much on the rise, despite recently losing Kylian Mbappe to Read Madrid. The club has dominated France but still needs to turn that success into glory in Europe. Club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has insisted that his side are currently behind rival sides, he said; “All the other European clubs have constructed bigger, more modern stadiums. We are behind everyone.” The news is fresh off the back of news that the Paris City Council will not let PSG purchase the Parc des Princes stadium, which he confirmed, saying, “It is the city that has already decided that for us. They won't let PSG buy the Parc des Princes, which is rented.”
The club moved into the stadium in 1973, and while work was done to improve it ahead of the Paris Olympics, further capacity increases seem unlikely. PSG, however, need to increase revenue, and increasing capacity is a great way to do that. ” We need a truly great stadium. The best stadium in the world. We need to for Financial Fair Play.”
PSG new stadium potential locations
For now, three potential sites have been put forward, though each has its downsides. The closest of the three at just three miles away, is the Saint Cloud racecourse, but this has issues with fan management, such as parking and safety fears.
The Montigny-le-Bretonneux, on the south side of Paris, is another option, but at 15 miles away from the current home, it would be a fair distance away. The mayor of the region has given PSG until the end of 2024 to come to a decision on the move; “The discussions are on standby“, which doesn't paint a great picture of the progress being made by PSG.
Lastly, and the furthest away location, Poissy is located in the Western suburb of Paris. While 18 miles from the Parc des Princes, the location is only 2.5 miles away from the PSG training facility in Yvelines.
For now, PSG has a dream of a new home, but it's one that will cost them. However, a club of the size of PSG surely cannot rely on renting a stadium for the long term, with the owners surely keen to get the club into its own dedicated stadium sooner rather than later.
