Scotland supporters heading to the 2026 World Cup have taken matters into their own hands and have found a creative solution to avoid spiralling travel prices in the United States.

With costs around several host venues rapidly rising, fans are now proving that a bit of ingenuity can go a long way.

Scotland fans hire US school buses to avoid rising 2026 World Cup transport costs

A group of travelling supporters have organised a fleet of classic American school buses to transport fans to matches at Gillette Stadium, cutting costs dramatically in the process.

Instead of paying inflated prices of up to $90 (£75) for official transport from Boston, fans based in nearby Providence have secured buses for around $38 (£28) per person.

Even more remarkably, local police have agreed to escort the convoy out towards the stadium, turning the journey into something of an event in itself.

Davy Hood, who came up with the idea, told the BBC: “We came up with the idea of ‘what about these school buses? We thought maybe if the schools are off, the buses will be sitting idle.

“We got in touch with a couple of companies who came back with prices that suited us.”

Scotland begin their campaign in Foxborough against Haiti, before facing Morocco at the same venue, meaning the cost-saving plan will be used multiple times across the group stage.

FGG says: A brilliant fan-led solution to a growing problem at the 2026 World Cup

This is exactly the kind of initiative fans shouldn’t have to come up with, but fair play, it’s a clever workaround.

With transport, tickets and accommodation all climbing to eye-watering levels, supporters are being forced to think outside the box just to attend matches.

Hiring school buses might not be glamorous, especially if you’re tall and squeezed into those seats, but it will prove effective and far better than being priced out altogether.

It also highlights a wider issue. When fans are organising convoys to avoid official transport, something clearly isn’t working.

Still, there’s something fitting about it too – a convoy of tartan-clad Scotland fans rolling up to a World Cup stadium in yellow school buses feels like the kind of chaotic, memorable experience that international tournaments are all about.
