One of the world’s most famous football stadiums is set for a major transformation.
South American giants Boca Juniors have confirmed plans for the biggest renovation in the ground's history as they look to increase their capacity.
Boca Juniors to expand famous La Bombonera stadium to 80,000 seats
Boca Juniors have announced ambitious plans to expand their legendary home, La Bombonera, as part of a project expected to cost between $50 million and $60 million (approximately £45 million).
The redevelopment will increase the stadium’s capacity from around 57,000 to 80,000 seats, helping more supporters attend matches at one of South America’s most iconic football venues.
Opened in 1940 and officially named Alberto J. Armando Stadium, the ground is famous for its steep stands and intense atmosphere.

Club officials stressed the expansion will preserve the stadium’s identity rather than replace it with a new venue.
“La Bombonera is not being moved. A new stadium is not being built. It is being expanded while respecting its identity,” the club said when outlining the proposal.
Work is expected to begin during the 2026 FIFA World Cup period this summer and could take at least two years to complete.
The move also follows developments at fierce rivals River Plate, who recently announced plans to upgrade and roof their own stadium, Estadio Monumental, and increase capacity to more than 100,000.
FGG says: Expanding La Bombonera without losing its identity will be key
There are few stadiums in world football that are as distinctive as La Bombonera, which is unmistakably recognisable with one side of the ground a straight vertical construction filled with VIP boxes.
For years, Boca supporters have pushed for a larger capacity because demand for tickets vastly exceeds supply, with many of the club’s huge membership base unable to attend matches regularly.
The challenge will be modernising the stadium while preserving the unique character that makes it famous.
If Boca can expand to 80,000 without losing that iconic atmosphere, then the project could strengthen the venue’s reputation as one of the most intimidating and iconic homes in football.
