Sunderland are preparing for another major summer of investment following their return to the Premier League, with fresh upgrades now planned at both the Stadium of Light and Academy of Light.

After already committing significant spending following promotion, the Black Cats have now confirmed that a new phase of improvements will begin during the close season as the club continues modernising its infrastructure on and off the pitch.

Sunderland to upgrade Stadium of Light facilities this summer

Sunderland have announced a fresh wave of investment into the Stadium of Light and the Academy of Light ahead of the new Premier League season.

The club say “multi-million-pound” works will be carried out this summer, with improvements aimed at supporters, players, staff and commercial partners.

At the Stadium of Light, Sunderland will install a new LED perimeter advertising system while also expanding corporate hospitality areas as part of efforts to boost long-term revenues ahead of the Premier League’s incoming Squad Cost Ratio rules.

Further supporter-focused upgrades are also planned, alongside the previously announced expansion of safe-standing sections inside the stadium.

Meanwhile, the Academy of Light will see investment across training and recovery facilities, including pitch upgrades and new technology designed to improve preparation and player performance across all age groups.

Interim CEO Tom Burwell said the latest works are part of a “multi-year commitment” from the ownership group.

He explained: “This is not about short-term change – it is part of a multi-year commitment from the ownership group to build a Club that is sustainable, progressive, and capable of competing at the highest level across every area of the business.

“From the Stadium of Light to the Academy of Light, we are continuing to invest in our infrastructure, our people, and the experiences we deliver.”

The announcement comes just days after Sunderland’s owners insisted they remain fully committed to the club amid reports suggesting outside investment was being explored.

FGG says: Another big boost for Sunderland fans

For supporters, this is another clear indication that the Black Cats' Premier League return is being treated as a long‑term project rather than a short‑term windfall.

The Stadium of Light remains one of the country’s most recognisable modern grounds, and continued investment in fan facilities, safe standing and the wider matchday experience should only help elevate the atmosphere even further.

Coupled with the upgrades at the Academy of Light, it also underlines a strategy built on sustainability and infrastructure, not simply throwing money at transfers, but strengthening the foundations of the club for years to come.
