One of the standout sights of the 2026 World Cup so far has not come from the pitch, but from the stands.

Norway's supporters have captured global attention with their now-viral “Ro!” chant, bringing a distinctly Scandinavian flavour to the tournament as thousands of fans row in unison before and during matches.

The history behind Norway's famous ‘Ro!' chant

The chant is inspired by Norway's deep connection to Viking history and longships, with supporters mimicking the rowing motion of Viking crews as they chant together.

The word “Ro” translates as “row” in Norwegian, making the symbolism obvious as thousands of supporters move their arms in synchronised fashion, recreating the image of a Viking ship powering through the water.

While the rowing motion has only recently gained international attention, the chant itself is linked to Norway's fan culture and the song “Alt for Norge” (“Everything for Norway”), which was released in 1994 to celebrate the country's first World Cup qualification since 1938.

The modern version of the display was developed by supporters' group Oljeberget ahead of the tournament and made its debut during a friendly against Switzerland in Oslo earlier this year.

Its popularity quickly exploded across social media, with many drawing comparisons to Iceland's famous thunderclap that became one of the defining images of Euro 2016 and then Russia 2018.

Since arriving in North America, Norway fans have performed the chant in stadiums, fan zones and even on escalators in Boston and New York, helping it become one of the visual highlights of the tournament.

With Norway appearing at their first World Cup since 1998, supporters have embraced Viking imagery throughout the competition, with helmets, flags and rowing displays becoming a regular feature wherever the team travels.

FGG says: This is the 2026 World Cup's viral fan moment

Every major tournament seems to produce one supporter tradition that becomes instantly recognisable around the world.

For Euro 2016, it was Iceland's thunderclap. At the 2026 World Cup, Norway's “Ro!” chant looks well on its way to earning a place alongside it.

The combination of history, culture and visual spectacle makes it impossible to ignore, and it's exactly the sort of fan-driven tradition that helps define a tournament.

Long after the final whistle blows in North America, the sight of thousands of Norwegian supporters rowing together will likely remain one of the enduring images of this World Cup.
