Wrexham AFC’s remarkable rise under Hollywood ownership has been one of football’s standout stories, but fresh scrutiny has now emerged over how public funding linked to the Racecourse Ground has been used.

New reports have raised questions about taxpayer money contributing to pitch upgrades, sparking debate beyond North Wales about where the line should be drawn when it comes to state-backed investment in football clubs.

How taxpayer money ended up funding Racecourse Ground pitch upgrades

At the centre of the issue is an £18 million public funding package awarded to Wrexham, initially intended to support wider redevelopment plans at the Racecourse Ground, including infrastructure improvements and the new Kop Stand.

However, documents have revealed that around £1.7m was also used for pitch upgrades, including undersoil heating, drainage and reinforcement work.

These improvements were not explicitly referenced in the original grant documentation, only appearing later in revised agreements, per a report from the Guardian.

That has led to criticism from some quarters, with questions raised about oversight and whether public funds should have been used in this way, particularly given the club’s improved financial position following investment and rapid on-pitch success.

Wrexham council did not comment specifically on the pitch when approached, but previously insisted that “all due diligence and checks were in place” before any funding was transferred.

FGG says: A lot of noise about Wrexham but not where it matters most

On paper, it’s a story that raises valid governance questions, as public money should always come with transparency. It is certainly fair to ask how and where it’s being spent.

But context matters, and this is where the conversation often gets lost.

Around Wrexham itself, it’s incredibly difficult to find genuine negativity about the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, and this spending.

The impact on the club, the city and the wider local economy has been overwhelmingly positive.

The upgrades, including the pitch, around the Racecourse are part of a much bigger picture of modernising one of football’s most historic grounds and ensuring it can keep pace with the club’s rapid rise.

Ultimately, while the debate will continue at a national level, those closest to the club tend to see it very differently.
