Tottenham’s Sandro Tonali targeted by brutal Newcastle fan chants in Premier League defeat

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Sandro Tonali was targeted by brutal chants during the 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Italian midfielder made the £100m move from Newcastle to Tottenham earlier in the summer window, and the Magpies took no time in letting their former star know what they think about his transfer.

Newcastle fans were heard directing boos and jeers at Tonali throughout the match before cheering the midfielder off as the Magpies edged closer to victory, while several chants were also directed Tonali's way.

Newcastle United fans, alongside directing boos and jeers towards Tonali, were heard chanting “one greedy ba*****” and “you should have stayed at a big club” throughout the match.

The chants only increased in volume as Newcastle marched to a 2-0 victory against the midfielder's new club, with second-half goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa handing Spurs a 2-0 defeat in their first home game of the 2026/27 Premier League season.

Tottenham Hotspur have now lost both of their first two Premier League fixtures, having lost 3-0 to Brentford on the opening day, leaving them bottom of the standings with zero points and a -5 goal difference.

Tonali is one of many big-money signings made by Spurs this summer, alongside the likes of Savio, Omar Marmoush and Matheus Fernandes, but the Italian may regret his decision following former club Newcastle's victory.

While Tonali was targeted by brutal Newcastle chants, the Magpies made their adoration clear for replacement Nico Gonzalez, who produced an impressive display on his debut for Newcastle United.

The Magpies have now picked up four points from their opening two games under new manager Matthias Jaissle, having opened the season with a thrilling 2-2 draw against Liverpool, when former player Alexander Isak was also the target of brutal chants.

Moving from Newcastle United to Tottenham Hotspur may have felt like the right move for Tonali, who reportedly needed little time to make his mind up about leaving St James' Park, but the grass is proving to not always be greener.

While Newcastle have produced encouraging signs under Jaissle, Tottenham's miserable Premier League record over the last two seasons has continued at the beginning of the new campaign, and Tonali may well start to regret his decision if results and performances do not quickly improve.
