AFC Bournemouth appear to have moved a major step closer to transforming the Vitality Stadium after long-running expansion plans edged towards approval.
The South Coast outfit have been pushing to modernise and significantly increase the capacity of their current home as they continue establishing themselves as a Premier League side.
Vitality Stadium expansion plans set to be approved
Bournemouth’s proposals to redevelop the Vitality Stadium are set to go before BCP Council’s Eastern Area Planning Committee next week, with officers set to recommend approval, per the BBC.
The plans would increase the stadium’s capacity from 11,286 to more than 20,000 through a phased redevelopment programme. This includes demolishing and rebuilding the South Stand, expanding the North and East Stands and filling in the stadium corners.
Alongside the additional seating, the project also includes upgraded hospitality areas, a covered fan zone, a new ticket office, improved media facilities, secure away coach parking and a large new screen in the north-east corner. Accessibility improvements are also planned, including a sensory room, Changing Places facility, accessible lifts and additional wheelchair spaces.
As part of the wider development, the Cherries would also fund improvements around the local area, including upgrades to Pokesdown railway station, parking controls and better walking and cycling infrastructure.
While dozens of objections were submitted raising concerns over traffic, parking and noise, planning officers concluded that the overall benefits outweighed the negative impacts.

FGG says: Huge boost for Bournemouth after recent setbacks
For Bournemouth, this feels like a hugely important breakthrough after months of uncertainty surrounding the project.
Recent delays had started to raise fears that the club’s long-term stadium ambitions could continue drifting, particularly at a time when infrastructure growth is becoming increasingly important financially in the Premier League.
The Vitality Stadium has long been viewed as one of the smallest and most limiting grounds in the division, so moving towards a 20,000-capacity venue would represent a transformational step for the club both commercially and in terms of matchday atmosphere.
It also gives Bournemouth a chance to build momentum off the pitch alongside their progress on it.
With the club continuing to push towards potential European qualification, finally getting movement on the stadium front is exactly the sort of boost supporters will have wanted to see after the recent planning frustrations.
