Naples is not a city that does things by halves, and Arsenal fans travelling to Italy for the Champions League opener against Napoli on September 9 will have plenty to consider when choosing where to stay.

The Stadio Diego Armando Maradona sits in Fuorigrotta, around 5km west of central Naples, meaning supporters can either base themselves close to the stadium for maximum matchday convenience or stay in the historic centre, Chiaia or along the waterfront and use public transport to reach the ground.

The latter option is arguably the better choice for fans staying for more than one night. Naples' Line 2 metro and rail network provides a straightforward connection towards the Fuorigrotta area, while staying centrally puts Arsenal supporters within easy reach of the city's restaurants, bars, historic sights and waterfront.

One important consideration is timing. September remains a busy period for tourism in Naples, while an Arsenal Champions League fixture is likely to put additional pressure on hotel availability. Supporters should book as early as possible, particularly if they want to stay in the city's more popular central districts.

Hotels close to the stadium

For Arsenal fans whose priority is a straightforward matchday journey, Fuorigrotta and the surrounding area offer several practical options within walking distance or a short public transport journey of the Maradona.

LHP Napoli Palace & Spa

LHP Napoli Palace & Spa is one of the strongest options for supporters who want to stay close to the stadium without sacrificing comfort. The hotel is only around a five-minute walk from the Maradona and approximately 250 metres from Piazza Leopardi metro station, making it particularly convenient on matchday.

The four-star property has a spa and wellness centre, rooftop swimming pool and bar, restaurant, fitness facilities and air-conditioned rooms. Its combination of proximity to the stadium and access to public transport makes it one of the best all-round choices in Fuorigrotta.

Palazzo Esedra

Palazzo Esedra is another practical option close to the stadium, located in the Campi Flegrei area and within a short bus journey of the Maradona.

The property benefits from its proximity to the Campi Flegrei transport hub and offers free parking, making it particularly useful for Arsenal supporters driving into Naples. A direct bus connection can take around 18 minutes to the stadium.

It is not quite as close to the stadium as the original version suggested, but its combination of location, parking and transport links still makes it a sensible choice for travelling supporters.

Hotel San Paolo

Hotel San Paolo is another Fuorigrotta option, located on Via Terracina and close to the Mostra d'Oltremare and the Maradona.

The four-star hotel offers free, secured parking and is well connected to the surrounding area, with the hotel's own website highlighting its proximity to the stadium and Piazzale Tecchio railway station.

It is around 1.6km from the Maradona by road and can be reached on foot in roughly 20 minutes, making it a good choice for supporters who want to avoid relying on public transport after the match.

Hotels in Chiaia and along the waterfront

For Arsenal fans who want to experience Naples as well as attend the football, Chiaia and the waterfront are arguably the best areas to consider.

These neighbourhoods offer a much wider selection of restaurants, bars and attractions, while the Maradona remains accessible by public transport or taxi.

De Bonart Naples

De Bonart Naples is a premium option in Chiaia rather than Fuorigrotta, located on Corso Vittorio Emanuele close to Piazza Amedeo station. The hotel is approximately 3.3km from the Maradona, so it is not a walk-to-the-stadium option for most supporters, but its location gives Arsenal fans a much better base for exploring central Naples.

The five-star property offers a spa, gym, restaurant, bar, terrace and parking. Its proximity to Piazza Amedeo also provides straightforward access to the city's public transport network.

For fans who want a high-end hotel without staying in the immediate stadium area, this is one of the strongest options.

Grand Hotel Parker's

Grand Hotel Parker's is one of Naples' most prestigious hotels and has been welcoming guests since 1870. Situated in Chiaia on Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the five-star property occupies an elevated position with panoramic views across the Bay of Naples.

Its George restaurant holds two Michelin stars, while the hotel's rooftop offers views across the Gulf, Capri and Mount Vesuvius.

This is the choice for Arsenal fans treating the trip as a luxury European break rather than simply an away day.

Eurostars Hotel Excelsior

For supporters wanting to stay directly on the waterfront, Eurostars Hotel Excelsior is an excellent option.

The four-star hotel sits on Via Partenope, close to Castel dell'Ovo and Piazza del Plebiscito, and is approximately 4.8km from the Maradona.

Its waterfront location puts Arsenal fans within easy reach of some of Naples' best restaurants and attractions, while the stadium can be reached by public transport or taxi.

It is less convenient for the match than the Fuorigrotta hotels, but considerably better placed for experiencing Naples itself.

Hotel Paradiso, BW Signature Collection

Hotel Paradiso sits on Posillipo Hill and offers spectacular views across the Gulf of Naples, with Mount Vesuvius providing the backdrop.

The four-star hotel is around 5.6km from the Maradona and is connected to the stadium by bus, while taxis take roughly eight minutes in normal conditions.

The hotel's own information places the Maradona within approximately 2.5km, although road and walking distances are longer depending on the route used.

Its rooftop restaurant and panoramic setting make it an attractive choice for supporters who want somewhere memorable to stay, although it is less convenient than Fuorigrotta for getting to the match.

Budget options

For Arsenal fans looking to keep accommodation costs under control, Fuorigrotta remains the area to target.

Hotel Primavera

Hotel Primavera is a small, budget-friendly property in the wider Fuorigrotta area, offering free parking, Wi-Fi and a bar/lounge. It is approximately 1.5km from the Maradona, with several metro stations within reasonable reach.

It is a much more functional option than the luxury hotels in Chiaia or on the waterfront, but that is precisely the point for supporters who intend to spend most of their time exploring Naples or following Arsenal.

Best Western JFK Hotel

Best Western JFK Hotel is another practical Fuorigrotta option and is approximately 1.2km from the Maradona, making it walkable in around 15 minutes.

The four-star property has air-conditioned rooms, Wi-Fi and covered parking, while Cavalleggeri Aosta and other local transport connections are within walking distance.

It strikes a useful balance between price, comfort and proximity to the stadium, making it one of the better choices for supporters who want to keep their accommodation costs down without staying too far from the action.

FGG Verdict

For Arsenal fans travelling to Naples for the Champions League, the best area ultimately depends on what you want from the trip.

Fuorigrotta is the obvious choice for pure matchday convenience, with hotels such as LHP Napoli Palace & Spa and Hotel San Paolo within walking distance of the Maradona.

For supporters staying for two or three nights, however, Chiaia and the waterfront offer the better overall experience. You will have Naples' restaurants, bars, historic sights and spectacular coastline on your doorstep, while the stadium remains accessible by public transport.

The luxury choice is Grand Hotel Parker's, while Hotel Paradiso offers arguably the best views. At the budget end, Hotel Primavera and Best Western JFK Hotel provide practical bases close to the stadium.

Whichever area you choose, book early. A Champions League night involving Arsenal is likely to put additional pressure on availability, and the most conveniently located hotels are unlikely to get cheaper as matchday approaches.
