Why councillors are pushed to ‘refuse’ Liverpool’s Anfield Road plan as key dispute intensifies

Liverpool's plans to permanently close part of Anfield Road have suffered a significant setback after councillors backed moves to reject the proposal.

The decision is not yet final, but it leaves the club facing fresh uncertainty over one of its most contentious post-expansion issues.

Councillors reject Anfield Road plans ahead of final decision

According to the BBC, Liverpool City Council's planning committee has voted that it is “minded to refuse” the application to permanently close part of Anfield Road to vehicles, despite planning officers recommending the proposal for approval.

The application relates to the section of Anfield Road alongside the expanded Anfield Road Stand, which has remained closed to traffic since 2021 during and after the redevelopment project.

Liverpool argue reopening the road would create significant safety concerns, including increased risks to pedestrians on matchdays and the removal of an important protective buffer around the stadium perimeter.

Counter Terrorism Policing North West has supported the club's position, while the council's building control service warned reopening the road could affect Anfield‘s safety certificate.

However, residents and local politicians have continued to oppose the permanent closure, arguing it has diverted traffic onto surrounding residential streets and damaged relations between the club and the local community.

Councillors cited concerns over traffic flow, environmental impacts and the effect on nearby residents when voting to recommend refusal. Anfield ward councillor Billy Marrat suggested the road could instead remain open on non-matchdays before being closed only for fixtures and major events.

The planning committee's vote does not formally reject the application, with the proposal set to return for a final determination at a future meeting.

Supporter safety and stadium security are paramount, but so too are the concerns of residents who live with matchday disruption throughout the year.

A compromise, such as opening the road outside of matchdays while allowing closures when crowds are present, may ultimately prove the most practical solution for everyone involved.
