Wolverhampton Wanderers have confirmed that The Liquidator will not return to the pre-match entertainment at Molineux Stadium this season after completing a review of the controversial tune.

The decision follows discussions with supporters and the stadium's Safety Advisory Group, with the club citing concerns over discriminatory chanting.

Wolves extend The Liquidator ban at Molineux

Old Gold executive chairman Nathan Shi committed to reviewing the club's position on The Liquidator during a BBC WM Fan Forum in May.

The club has now completed that review, which included consultation with the Molineux Stadium Safety Advisory Group and consideration of the song's history, supporter opinion and Wolves' responsibilities around safety and behaviour.

The Liquidator has long been associated with the atmosphere at Molineux, but Wolves have decided it will remain absent from the pre-match entertainment schedule, as it has done for the past two decades.

The club pointed to sanctions received from the Football Association in recent seasons relating to mass discriminatory chanting, arguing that reintroducing a song which has historically prompted offensive chanting would not be appropriate.

Shi said the club had “considered the different views, reviewed the history and context, and consulted with the Safety Advisory Group” before deciding that continuing the ban was the right course of action.

He also acknowledged the importance of The Liquidator to sections of the Wolves support and its place in Molineux's history, but said the club had to make decisions based on its current responsibilities and the standards expected of its matchday environment.

Wolves are celebrating their 150th anniversary this season and said they remain committed to protecting the traditions that make Molineux distinctive while developing the matchday experience.

The club will continue discussing supporter issues through its Fan Advisory Board and Fan Experience Focus Group.

FGG says: A decision that will continue to divide opinion

There is clearly no easy answer here.

The Liquidator was an important part of the Molineux atmosphere for generations, but its association with offensive chanting means the club's concerns are understandable.

The decision has caused plenty of debate among Wolves supporters and even extends beyond their fanbase, with Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion fans also having their own views on the song.
