It's been a brutal build-up to the FIFA World Cup for all match-going supporters, and they now have a further concern on top of security and ticket costs after health experts issued a warning about potential diseases at the tournament.

The world is still recovering from the COVID pandemic at the beginning of the decade, and while there are no fears about anything at that scale, health chiefs are preparing for a spike in illnesses in all World Cup host cities due to the number of people expected to arrive stateside in June.

Doctors warn of ‘huge migration event'

According to healthcare professionals in New York and New Jersey, hospitals have been preparing for outbreaks of diseases during the World Cup for several years now.

While that will fill some individuals with dread, it should also provide tourists with confidence that the US healthcare system is prepared for all eventualities.

Dr Vikramjit Mukherjee, the chief of critical care and the special pathogens program at Bellevue Hospital in New York, explained:

“The whole health care system in New York City will be a bit on alert. We’re looking at it (the World Cup) as if it’s a huge global migration event.”

“Because of what we’ve seen in the last few years — Ebola, Covid, and mpox — we feel that we will be the ones who will be affected first for the next outbreak, and therefore have an additional responsibility of keeping prepared.”

Meanwhile, Dr Gregory Sugalski, chair of emergency medicine at Hackensack Meridian Health in New Jersey, told the New York Post:

“We understand the concerns sports fans might have when it comes to attending an event with so many others, from the US and from other countries, but I want to say two words to them: ‘No fear.’

“Our staff at Hackensack Meridian has been training and drilling for two years for this event. We’ve been on the frontline of care for major NFL games for the Giants and Jets, alongside high-profile concerts for celebrities like Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and Bruce Springsteen, and major entertainment events like Wrestlemania.”

FGG says: Something to take encouragement from

If you are heading to the World Cup this summer, this should be something you take encouragement from above anything else. There are expected to be at least ten million extra visitors to the USA this summer due to the tournament, so it's reassuring to learn that protocols are in place for potential outbreaks of illness.
