Wrexham have confirmed that main contract work has officially begun on the long-awaited Kop Stand redevelopment at The Racecourse.
The temporary stand was removed at the end of last season following the club’s historic third successive promotion, allowing the installation of a new pitch for the 2025-26 Championship campaign.
According to The Leader, crucial live power cable running across the site has now been removed after a new substation was built to support nearby student accommodation, enabling McLaren Construction to commence preparatory works.
Extensive earth excavation has taken place to create a level platform for the piling rigs that will support the new stand foundations.
Wrexham's infrastructure upgrades and preparations for UEFA U19 tournament
Chief executive officer Michael Williamson emphasised that significant unseen work was required before visible construction could begin.
He explained that the relocation of the university substation was essential before the power cable underneath the Kop could be rerouted, as only after this could workers undertake enabling tasks to prepare for the foundations.
This summer also brought major upgrades across the stadium, including enhanced undersoil heating, a new stitch pitch, improved television gantries and relocated dugouts, all necessary for hosting the UEFA Under-19 finals next year.
Williamson expects piling work to begin within 30 to 45 days, which will mark the moment when supporters finally see structural progress.

Completion timeline, UEFA compliance and future expansion plans of Kop Stand
The Kop Stand rebuild is scheduled to be finished ahead of Wrexham’s 2026-27 season and the UEFA Under-19 Championship in summer 2026.
Although the stand is unlikely to be fully completed for the tournament, the club will meet UEFA Category Three requirements and provide sufficient seating to host matches.
Williamson noted that a finalised schedule will be confirmed once detailed planning is completed with McLaren under a design-and-build agreement.
Beyond the Kop, Wrexham aim to increase capacity further by redeveloping the remaining stands. Williamson stressed that the club intends to deliver a flawless new Kop Stand and will take the necessary time to ensure the project is executed correctly.
FGG Says
Wrexham’s progress marks an important turning point in a redevelopment discussed for many years but delayed by complex logistical and infrastructural barriers. Williamson’s detailed explanation highlights why supporters had yet to see visible changes, despite extensive behind-the-scenes work.
The commitment to meeting UEFA standards while balancing long-term ambitions shows the club’s determination to modernise The Racecourse without compromising quality.
Although the full Kop Stand will not be ready for the Under-19 finals, the project is clearly advancing with purpose and clarity. Once complete, the new Kop will reshape the stadium and act as the foundation for further expansion in the years ahead.
