Wrexham have entered a landmark phase in their redevelopment plans as full construction of the new Kop Stand officially gets underway.

The new 5,500-seat Kop Stand, designed by renowned architects Populous, will take overall capacity beyond 18,000.

According to The Construction Index, this project is expected to reach its completion stage in the 2026-27 season, restoring the ground to a four-sided layout and deliver UEFA Category 4 compliance.

Kop Stand project moves from preparation phase to full build

Representatives from Wrexham, Wrexham County Borough Council, McLaren Construction Midlands and North, the Welsh Government, Wrexham University and the Wrexham Gateway Partnership gathered at the stadium on December 4 to celebrate the ceremonial launch of the main works.

McLaren Construction, appointed earlier this year under a pre-construction services agreement, has already delivered a broad package of enabling works.

These have included creating welfare facilities and compounds, completing reduced-level dig operations, establishing construction platforms, installing piling mats, relocating hoarding, forming a safe walkway from the Wrexham Lager Stand and beginning piling works which will continue into early 2026.

With the site now fully prepared, the project moves into its core construction period. Breakout piles and foundation casting begin this month, followed by reinforced concrete lift cores which will support the steel frame.

Work will also continue simultaneously on drainage, internal ducting and preparation for the main ground-floor slab.

Early 2026 will see the slip-formed concrete cores erected to stabilise the future roof structure. Around 1,500 tonnes of structural steel, including significant long-lead truss sections, are scheduled to rise from spring.

Precast terrace units, roofing installations, façade assembly and internal fit-out works will progress throughout 2026 and into 2027.

The project team has developed a precise sequencing strategy to manage the unique challenges of building within a live and historically sensitive stadium.

Coordination with the council, Wrexham University and nearby businesses has ensured disruption remains minimal during construction.

FGG Says

Wrexham’s Kop Stand redevelopment represents a transformative moment for both the club and the town. The move into full construction signals real, visible progress after years of planning, consultation and enabling work.

What stands out most is the project’s balance of ambition and sensitivity, delivering modern infrastructure while respecting the ground’s historic character. If the timeline holds, the Stoke Kai Ras will soon be one of the most impressive football venues in Wales, reflecting the club’s remarkable rise on and off the pitch.
